Oscar winning director Jonathan Demme has passed away this morning in New York after battling esophageal cancer.  He was 73.

Demme directed movies like The Silence of the Lambs, Philadelphia and Beloved.

His most recent studio film was Ricki and the Flash with Meryl Streep in 2015.

Demme most recently directed an episode of the Fox police show Shots Fired, scheduled to air tomorrow.  He also completed a film for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, to debut July 1.

Heartbroken to hear that Jonathan Demme has passed away. Rest in peace to one of cinema's most original artists.
