Country music singer Scotty McCreery is in trouble with the law after trying to board a plane with a loaded handgun last week.

The 23 year old winner of American Idol Season 10 was stopped by police at the airport in Raleigh, North Carolina after a scan of his backpack revealed a loaded handgun and several bullets.

McCreery told police he had visited a firing range before heading to the airport and “forgot” to remove the items before heading to the airport.

Scotty does own a concealed carry permit, but he was still charged with a misdemeanor violation for trying to bring the gun through an airport checkpoint and board a plane with it.

He told Billboard, that he has been carrying a weapon for “a while now” after he was robbed at gunpoint back in 2014. He added, “I take gun safety very seriously.”

His statement continued, “While in between tour dates last week, I went to go target shooting with a friend a few days before an early flight out of my hometown Raleigh-Durham airport. Unfortunately, I did not realize that I left my pistol in my backpack until the TSA found it during the security X-ray screening and rightfully confiscated it. I had my concealed carry permit on me so once they had checked everything out, they then released me to catch the next available flight. Great to know our airport security force is on the job. I have learned a lesson that I won’t forget.”
